If you are new to quilting or if you just need a refresher here are 10 steps to creating a great quilt.
1. Choose Your Fabric
This is the fun part—head to your local fabric store or dig through your stash and pick out colors and patterns that make you happy. For your first quilt, stick with cotton fabrics. They're easy to work with, durable, and wash well. You’ll want at least 2-3 different fabrics for a simple patchwork look, or more if you like variety.
2. Gather Supplies
Before diving in, gather everything you’ll need:
- Fabric (from Step 1)
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat (or good fabric scissors)
- Quilting ruler
- Straight pins or clips
- Thread (cotton or polyester)
- Batting (the fluffy layer inside)
- Backing fabric (for the quilt’s underside)
- Sewing machine (or a needle if you’re hand sewing)
This prep step saves you from scrambling mid-project. - Quilt Pattern - We have a great selection of patterns that are great for beginners.
3. Cut Your Fabric
Decide on your quilt’s design. (Shop our Beginner patterns). Beginners usually start with simple shapes, like squares or rectangles. Use your ruler and rotary cutter to cut the fabric into the right size pieces—say, 5-inch squares for a basic patchwork quilt. Try to be as accurate as possible, as neat pieces make assembly much easier.
4. Lay Out Your Design
Arrange your cut pieces on a table or the floor. Play around with the layout until you like the mix of colors and patterns. Take a photo to remember your arrangement so you can piece it together in the right order.
5. Sew the Pieces Together
Start by sewing small pieces into rows. Use a quarter-inch seam allowance (most quilts use this, but check your pattern. Check out this how-to video). Press the seams flat with an iron as you go. Once your rows are done, sew them together, row by row, to complete your quilt top.
6. Make a Quilt Sandwich
Lay the backing fabric down first, right side facing the floor. Next, place the batting on top, smoothing out any wrinkles. Finally, lay your quilt top (pretty side up) on top of the batting. This “quilt sandwich” is what you’ll sew together.
7. Pin or Baste the Layers
To keep all three layers from shifting, secure them together. You can use safety pins, straight pins, or large basting stitches. Space them out every few inches—don’t skimp, because this step is what keeps everything from bunching up while you sew.
8. Quilt the Layers
Now, sew through all three layers to hold them together. You can keep it simple with straight lines (“stitch in the ditch” along your seams), try gentle curves, or even experiment with a free-motion quilting pattern if you’re feeling adventurous. Start in the center and work outward to avoid wrinkles.
9. Trim and Bind the Edges
Once you’ve quilted the layers, trim the excess batting and backing to match the quilt top. Then make or buy binding (a long strip of fabric), fold it over the quilt’s edges, and sew it on, either by machine or by hand for a neat finish.
10. Enjoy Your Quilt!
That’s it! Wash and dry your quilt to give it that cozy, crinkled look. Then snuggle up, show it off, or give it as a gift. You’ve made something both beautiful and practical—enjoy!
Happy Quilting!
